I know, right? Writer boredom made for some really unique and bizarre setups.

And now this post is bookmarked, lol.

You a fan of TNG? There's a bunch of good laugh gifs, too. Not to mention a ton of Riker's particularly unique way of getting into a chair:

I haven't watched serious amounts in ages, but I think it's safe to say the cast were always a lot more solidly on than the writers. A lot of episodes by all rights should have been duff, but got saved anyway. It's a much better show than the writers themselves were set to make - chemistry is a hell of a thing.

Yup, I cringe when re-watching some episodes, because seeing them again as an adult doesn't jive with the memories I have of how awesome TNG is/was. But then I realize it's exactly as you say, and that most of my fond memories come from just how awesome the cast was together. They made the show. And I still have TNG to thank in large part for igniting my love for all things sci-fi. ^_^

It's harder for kids to pick up on the total abject stupidity of things like that one episode (early S1, I think) in which they're learning the merits of holographic technology, and there's a smiling guy painting a wall "because based on what he's seeing, he's painting a beautiful picture". No. Stop. Every job has a right way to do it, and a way to take pride in it... literally nothing in that premise makes a gram of sense to anyone intellectually over 9 years old. And the Wesley stuff with The Traveler - ugh, kill me now. "You're so special, Wesley" - "Yes, I know I'm special, hey guys I'm special".

Chemistry, though - that's something kids can pick up on and enjoy.

Ugh. I hated Wesley. He was a pompous little self-important... snowflake. I still kinda dislike Will Wheaton to this day, lol. But Sir Pat Stew? Love him!

Season 1 had some major problems (the rape episode of Deanna Troy comes to mind), but I do like that Star Trek tried to incorporate some real science into their fiction, though. And c'mon, some things we saw there first are commonplace objects now, like tablet computers and automatic sliding doors.

There were a couple of writers on board who had a handle on how to write Wesley (i.e. like a kid, not a bratty adult who thought he was a teen cheerleader), but it was hit and miss episode to episode. A Mary Sue (or Gary Stu) who's a kid should generally be avoided like the plague, even if he's supposed to be an outreach character for the target audience. Doctor Who learned that lesson with the companion Adric *years* before Wesley appeared, and they still made the mistake! Wil has done a lot of growing up, but (ironically) still falls from time to time into petulance and Wesley-ism in his public interactions.

Sir Pat was the anchor of the show, no question, but Jonathan Frakes is severely underrated, and Brent Spiner must have method acted like hell to pull off Data like he did.

As goofy as S1 is, they were willing to try a lot of wild ideas that didn't necessarily pan out, but were wilder than later on. Some things, of course, seeding good stuff for the middle of the run - like Q.
